Hunt begins for most scenic spots

The wisdom of crowds is being tapped to map the most scenic parts of England, Scotland and Wales.Modelled on the HotOrNot website, ScenicOrNot presents visitors with snaps of rural and urban locations rather than people.

The presented images are rated on a one to 10 scale and the site aims to create a map of "scenicness".

The pictures are drawn from a database of 200,000 each of which is representative of 1km square of land.

Picture perfect

ScenicOrNot is a project of Mysociety, an organisation set up with the aim of increasing the transparency of democratic institutions through the development of online tools.

The goal is to use the data generated by user ratings to produce a map of "scenicness".

Speaking to Radio 4's PM programme, Tom Steinberg director of Mysociety, said he was drawn to this method of collecting data because HotOrNot style rating systems are "incredibly sophisticated clever ways of doing online polling".

As the images are randomly presented to users it is much harder to manipulate the results. "You can't besmirch places you don't like", Mr Steinberg said.

Although the exercise is billed as a game, it has a serious side. Numerous policy decisions are influenced by whether or not a place is commonly regarded as scenic, because of this Mr Steinberg said the new data generated by the project would be made "open so that anyone can re-use it and play with it later on".

The site's FAQ also states that the data will be used for a "secret project", though Mr Steinberg was not prepared to reveal what that would be.

The photos displayed on ScenicOrNot are sourced from images submitted to Geograph.org.uk a site that collects user generated, geographically representative, photographs and information for every square kilometre of Great Britain and Ireland.

The images vary in quality and Mr Steinberg is aware of the risk that ratings may reflect the skill of the photographer not the landscape.

"We encourage people quite strongly to discount any aspect of photographic skill," he said.

A limited number of latest results are posted on ScenicOrNot's "leaderboard". For the moment it appears that unspoilt countryside is viewed as particularly scenic; by comparison the modern built environment seems to do relatively poorly.

Jon Wright, a senior case worker at the 20th Century Society, which aims to "safeguard the heritage of architecture and design in Britain from 1914 onwards", said he was intrigued by the project.

Mr Wright added that that urban areas and those of classically beautiful parts of the country are very different in character. He said: "Those views should be judged on their own terms."

The data could also be used to reveal places that are not scenic. Mr Steinberg said he was uncomfortable with highlighting the least lovely places in Britain.

He said: "Can you imagine how you'd feel if someone said to you of the 217,000 square kilometres in Britain you're in the worst one?"

Optical disc offers 500GB storage

A disc that can store 500 gigabytes (GB) of data, equivalent to 100 DVDs, has been unveiled by General Electric.

The micro-holographic disc, which is the same size as existing DVD discs, is aimed at the archive industry.

But the company believes it can eventually be used in the consumer market place and home players.

Blu-ray discs, which are used to store high definition movies and games, can currently hold between 25GB and 50GB.

Micro-holographic discs can store more data than DVDs or Blu-ray because they store information on the disc in three dimensions, rather than just pits on the surface of the disc.

The challenge for this area of technology has been to increase the reflectivity of the holograms that are stored on the discs so that players can be used to both read and write to the discs.

Brian Lawrence, who leads GE's Holographic Storage said on the GE Research blog: "Very recently, the team at GE has made dramatic improvements in the materials enabling significant increases in the amount of light that can be reflected by the holograms."

More capacity

The higher reflectivity that can be achieved, the more capacity for the disc. While the technology is still in the laboratory stage, GE believes it will take off because players can be built which are backwards compatible with existing DVD and Blu-ray technologies.

In a statement the firm said: "The hardware and formats are so similar to current optical storage technology that the micro-holographic players will enable consumers to play back their CDs, DVDs and Blu-ray discs."

''GE's breakthrough is a huge step toward bringing our next generation holographic storage technology to the everyday consumer,'' said Mr Lawrence in a statement.

He added: "The day when you can store your entire high definition movie collection on one disc and support high resolution formats like 3D television is closer than you think.''

Micro-holographic technology has been one of the leading areas of research for storage experts for decades. Discs are seen as a reliable and effective form of storage and are both consumer and retail friendly.

However, General Electric will need to work with hardware manufacturers if it is to bring the technology to the consumer market.

The relatively modest adoption of Blu-ray discs sales globally might be an issue with some companies who believe digital distribution and cloud computing is the long-term answer to content delivery and storage.

"This is truly a breakthrough in the development of the materials that are so critical to ultimately bringing holographic storage to the everyday consumer," said Mr Lawrence.

Google rolls out search changes

Google has launched two experimental products it hopes will change the way users search for pictures and news.

A feature known as Similar Images uses a picture rather than text to find other matching images.

Timeline presents information already available in Google News but organised and displayed chronologically.

Alongside these features is a new version of Google Labs, in which users can take a peek at what its thousands of engineers are working on.

Amid past criticism that Google has wasted too much time and effort on projects that have little impact, the aim of the Labs upgrade is to make prototypes available earlier.

"The idea we are trying to build here with Labs and the culture of innovation is to close the gap at the point of which a new idea is hatched and the time it takes to get into the hands of users for feedback," said Google director of product management R J Pittman.

This means engineers can find out at a much earlier stage what does and does not work in a new feature or product allowing them to either reshape it or scrap it altogether.

Google said that in the present economic climate this approach made complete sense.

"We are not especially sure where the industry is headed or the economy is headed but we do know that innovation is alive and well at Google," said Mr Pittman.

"This is a time when innovation is at its most critical in any company."

"Hard problem"

Google is the leader in search with nearly 64% of the American market compared with Yahoo, which has just over 20% and Microsoft with 8.3%

By adding new features to enrich the experience, it is undoubtedly hoping to increase its grip on the world of search.

Similar Images allows users to sort through the results of an image search more easily by clicking on a link. In a presentation to journalists, Google's director of engineering Radhika Malpani used the example of Paris to illustrate the benefits of the new feature.

While the initial search came up with the celebrity Paris Hilton, the Eiffel Tower and a photograph of an old church, clicking on any one of these images would restrict the search to one of the three. In other words the query is expressed visually as an image and not text.

"Image search is an inherently hard problem to solve because it is a visual problem and explains why people say an image is worth a thousand words because it is so difficult to describe," said Ms Malpani.

She said Google's goal was to "cover all the public images of the world and make all the images accessible to all our users".

"Work of art"

Google said another tool to help users find more relevant results was through the Google News Timeline.

It is the brainchild of Andy Hertzfeld, a key member of the original Apple Macintosh development team.

Using Timeline, users searching for baseball scores or the Iraq War will be shown a history of articles, photographs and videos arranged by date, week, month or year. Users can also refine the search to specific magazines, newspapers or blogs. Other search possibilities include Wikipedia, movies, music or even video games.

"I am like a kid in a candy store with all this information and it's great to make it accessible to our users," Mr Hertzfeld told BBC News.

"I think being able to see the culture of the human race laid out on the computer screen like this is fantastic. It's its own work of art seeing the sum of what humanity cared about through time."

"Newer approaches"

Out of all the work being done at Google, the company decided to unveil two projects that are closely aligned to a growing shift in the world of search.

"They are reflective of what Google started doing with universal search," explained internet analyst Greg Sterling.

"This shows they are pushing beyond text into other areas and other ways to present content. The approach is much more about multi-media, different views and different ways to navigate through data," said Mr Sterling.

Google's Mr Pittman agreed but also said that the traditional method remained the bedrock of search.

"Keyword search is still critical and mainstream. It is also pivotal because it is a very efficient mechanism where someone asks a question and they get an answer that is relevant and useful. I don't see that going away.

"These newer approaches are starting to tap into the appetite of the real-time web. These audiences are discovering new ways to search the web and get information and sound bites. These are early days for us and that's why we launched these new products.

"We make no claims about how they are going to change the face or shape of search but we think they have very compelling potential to do so. But we will let our users give us some feedback first and help us steer these in the right direction," stated Mr Pittman.

Gay marriage row at Miss USA show

Gay marriage row at Miss USA show . The runner-up at the Miss USA beauty pageant says her outspoken opposition to gay marriage cost her first place in the competition.During the televised event, Carrie Prejean - Miss California - said she believed that "a marriage should be between a man and a woman".

She had been asked for her views on the subject by one of the judges, celebrity blogger Perez Hilton.

"It did cost me my crown," said Ms Prejean, after the competition.

The eventual winner of the pageant was Kristen Dalton, Miss North Carolina.

'Alienated'

"We live in a land where you can choose same-sex marriage or opposite marriage," said Ms Prejean, in a section of the show that has become a popular clip on YouTube.

"I believe that a marriage should be between a man and a woman," she continued.

"No offence to anybody out there, but that's how I was raised."

The remarks drew a mixture of booing and applause from the audience.

Speaking after the show, which was broadcast on Sunday evening in the US, Ms Prejean said: "I wouldn't have had it any other way. I said what I feel. I stated an opinion that was true to myself and that's all I can do."

Hilton said he had been "floored" by Ms Prejean's answer, which, he said, "alienated millions of gay and lesbian Americans, their families and their supporters".

He told ABC News: "She lost it because of that question. She was definitely the front-runner before that."

Keith Lewis, who runs the Miss California competition, released a statement condemning Ms Prejean's comments.

"As co-director of the Miss California USA, I am personally saddened and hurt that Miss California believes marriage rights belong only to a man and a woman."

The issue of same-sex marriage is a flashpoint in American politics.

Four US states now allow gay marriage, but many other states have passed legislation outlawing it.

How Susan Boyle won over the world

Last weekend, Susan Boyle was just a face in the crowd.

This weekend, clips of her singing on Britain's Got Talent have notched up almost 50 million views on YouTube.

Her face appears on the front pages of papers in Britain and beyond, she been offered a seat on Oprah's sofa and has been told she is as good as guaranteed a worldwide number one album.

The rise of the 47-year-old spinster from Scotland has been a true global phenomenon.

Last Saturday, viewers saw Boyle, with double chin, unkempt hair, frumpy appearance and eccentric demeanour, step onto the talent show stage and proclaim her dream of being a professional singer.

The judges rolled their eyes and the audience pulled incredulous faces. Onlookers, on set and at home, were rubbing their hands at the prospect of another hopeless, deluded loser being crushed by a withering Simon Cowell insult.

Then she opened her mouth and sang I Dreamed A Dream from Les Miserables.

Her voice confounded all expectations - the judges' eyes bulged, the crowd went wild and Boyle became an instant star.

Watch Susan Boyle perform I Dreamed A Dream and speak to BBC Scotland

Ever since, the "fairytale" has travelled the globe and interest in the church volunteer has snowballed.

It is the story of a talent unearthed, but that does not fully explain why she has become such a sensation.

Boyle has shattered prejudices about the connection between age, appearance and talent. She has proved that you don't have to be young and glamorous to be talented, and recognised as such.

The YouTube millions have cheered on the underdog, and seen in her the possibilities for their own hopes and dreams.

Immediately after her performance, one of the judges, Amanda Holden, said they had been "very cynical", and that the performance was the "biggest wake-up call ever".

Another judge, former newspaper editor Piers Morgan, appeared with Boyle on CNN's Larry King Show.

"I'm sorry because we did not give you anything like the respect we should have done when you first came out," he told her. Referring to her appearance, he said: "We thought you were going to be a bit of a joke act, to be honest with you."

Boyle would have a best-selling album and a world tour by the end of the year, whether she wins Britain's Got Talent or not, he assured her.

And mentioning fellow judge Simon Cowell, Morgan added: "It's fair to say that his eyes have been going ker-ching ever since Susan's performance."

Blogs, newspaper columns and talk shows have been full of discussion about why Boyle has sparked such a reaction.

Lisa Schwarzbaum, writer for US celebrity magazine Entertainment Weekly, said the performance was a powerful reality check.

She wrote: "In our pop-minded culture so slavishly obsessed with packaging - the right face, the right clothes, the right attitudes, the right Facebook posts - the unpackaged artistic power of the unstyled, un-hip, un-kissed Ms Boyle let me feel, for the duration of one blazing showstopping ballad, the meaning of human grace.

"She pierced my defences. She reordered the measure of beauty. And I had no idea until tears sprang how desperately I need that corrective."

Her post has been followed by comments from scores of readers saying they watched the clip repeatedly, with the same emotional response.

"I cried SO hard," read one. "There's something so beautiful about reaching your dreams... and knowing that age means nothing."

Another wrote: "I cry because she reminds us to hope, to never lose track of our dreams, to keep putting one foot in front of the other no matter what others say or think. She gives us hope."

"Fairytales don't come any more satisfactory than this," wrote columnist Melanie Reid in The Times.

"The sisterhood of the plain, those of us who will never look like Girls Aloud, nor even Girls Aloud's grandmothers, are cheering as never before.

"Susan Boyle is the ugly duckling who didn't need to turn into a swan; she has fulfilled the dreams of millions who, downtrodden by the cruelty of a culture that judges them on their appearance, have settled for life without looking in the mirror."

Miranda Sawyer, writing in the Daily Mirror, questioned why image was less of an issue for male singers.

"No woman gets to perform publicly unless she looks like Mariah Carey," she wrote. "If you're a female singer, you are required by showbiz law to appear sexy at all times.

"Poor Madonna and Kylie are desperately keeping up appearances, holding back the years with Botox and face-fillers just so they're allowed to continue with their careers."

The Sun newspaper has given away a free Susan Boyle souvenir poster. US talk show host Jay Leno performed an impression of her on his show.

Demi Moore famously joined the fan club. Scottish First Minister Alex Salmond has congratulated her. She is odds-on favourite to win Britain's Got Talent.

A star has been born. Whether she will she leave a dent on our prejudices about age and appearance remains to be seen.

Two banks exposed to '$50bn con'

Two major European banks said they have exposure worth billions of dollars to a US broker accused of a $50bn (£33bn) Wall Street fraud scheme.
Spain's largest bank, Santander, which also owns three UK banks, said one of its funds had $3.1bn invested in the firm run by Bernard Madoff. France's BNP Paribas estimated its exposure to be more than $460m.
Mr Madoff has been charged with fraud, in what is being described as one of the biggest-ever such cases.
Correspondents say the case is likely to fuel uncertainty about the entire hedge fund industry.
'Systemic failures'
Mr Madoff is alleged to have used money from new investors to pay off existing investors in the fund.
Investors are assessing their exposure to the alleged fraud Mr Madoff is said by prosecutors to have confessed to.
US Prosecutors say Mr Madoff, a former head of the Nasdaq stock market, masterminded a fraud of massive proportions through his hedge fund and investment advisory business.

A federal judge has appointed a receiver to oversee Mr Madoff's firm's assets and customer accounts, while the 70-year-old banker has been released on $10m bail.
"While BNP Paribas has no investment of its own in the hedge funds managed by Bernard Madoff Investment Services, it does have risk exposure to these funds through its trading business and collateralised lending to funds of hedge funds," BNP said in a statement.
Santander said its exposure to Madoff was through its investment fund Optimal.
Santander also owns the UK High Street banks Abbey, Alliance & Leicester and Bradford & Bingley.
UK-based asset management firm Bramdean Alternatives accused US regulators of "systemic failures".
The firm saw its share value drop by over 35% after it revealed that about £21m - nearly 10% of its holding - was exposed to the New York broker.
"It is astonishing that this apparent fraud seems to have been continuing for so long, possibly for decades, while investors have continued to invest more money into the Madoff funds in good faith," the firm said.
"The allegations made appear to point to a systemic failure of the regulatory and securities markets regime in the US."
High returns promised
Mr Madoff founded Bernard L Madoff Investment Securities in 1960, but also ran a separate hedge fund business.
Investors have withdrawn from hedge funds amid market volatility.
According to the US Attorney's criminal complaint filed in court, Mr Madoff told at least three employees on Wednesday that the hedge fund business - which served up to 25 clients and had $17.1bn under management - was a fraud and had been insolvent for years, losing at least $50bn.
He said he was "finished", that he had "absolutely nothing" and that "it's all just one big lie", and that it was "basically, a giant Ponzi scheme", the complaint said.
He told them that he planned to surrender to the authorities but not before he used his last $200m-$300m to pay "selected employees, family and friends".
Under a Ponzi scheme, which is similar to pyramid schemes, investors are promised very high returns on their investment, while in reality early investors are paid with money collected from later investors.
If found guilty, US prosecutors say he could face up to 20 years in prison and a fine of up to $5m.
